Club Information

The Calendar

The Club organises quite a few events throughout the year. Some of these, like the Sunday club runs are weekly repeats, others occur periodically, and some are “one-offs”.

We aim to publish all our events in advance on our Facebook (VCH) events pages

Joining / Renewing your Membership

Club membership is provided via the British Cycling website... Click Here to view our British Cycling club profile then click on the 'Join Our Club' tab to process your club membership.  We have standard membership and concessions options available.

How to find out what’s happening

We use 3 ways to communicate:

  • We have a Virtual Clubhouse (VCH) on Facebook. Members use this to chat and share info that others may find useful. We also use it to tell members what’s happening in the Club and to share cycling stuff that members may find interesting.  The VCH is a private, members only group so search Facebook to find it and request to join.
  • Individual events are published on our Virtual Club House. Search for Berwick Wheelers Virtual Clubhouse on facebook to find us - and request to join (it’s a private group, limited to members, friends & guests).
  • Our calendar on this website also gives an overview of our planned activities throughout the year.

Sunday Club Runs

Sunday morning is our usual club run day.  Check the VCH events page, and our Strava club page as event locations and times do occasionally change.  If you’re coming along to an event then remember that it is courteous to signup via the event page to let the organiser know you are attending.  We try to have three groups:

  • Fast Group (29-35+kph / 18-22+mph) Fast rides for competent cyclists wanting to push on and train hard. If you get dropped the group may NOT wait for you so you need to know where you are, carry spares and be self-sufficient. You should be comfortable at riding at 29-35+ kph for 80km (18-22+ mph for 50 miles)
  • Tempo Group (23-27kph / 15-17mph) Medium paced rides for cyclists who want to push on but will regroup at junctions and the tops of hills for those able to maintain the minimum speed for this group. If you get dropped, keep going as the group MAY be waiting for you. Riders need to be a competent cyclists and carry spares/know how to do roadside repairs. You should be comfortable at riding at 23-27 kph for 80km (15-17 mph for 50 miles)
  • Casual Group (21-23kph / 13-15mph) Slower paced rides for cyclists who are happy to push on a bit but don’t yet have the legs for a faster paced ride. The group WILL regroup at junctions and the tops of hills. If you get dropped, keep going as the group are waiting for you. Expect the pace to pick up for the last 10km but don’t worry about being dropped as the road captain will double back and check all riders are safely back. You should be comfortable at riding at 21-23 kph for 60km (13-15 mph for 40 miles)

Other Regular Events

Chain Gang Tuesday.

This is NOT a Berwick Wheelers organised event and it is open to all local riders.  Riders meet at Swinton crossroads at 6:30 on Tuesday from end of March to the end of September.  Search  Facebook for the ‘Chain Gang Tuesday’ page and follow/post on the page to receive updates etc

Club Confined Time Trial

Members meet at Paxton Village Hall at 6:30 on Thursday from the end of March to September. Evets will be listed on the club Strava page and all members are welcome to race, though please sign up to the event before the day so the organiser knows who to expect.

Mountain / Gravel / CX Bike Rides

These events are not regular weekly rides so do not show on the calendar page of this website (as locations and start points/times can vary).   Events will be shown on the VCH Facebook group, they might include a group visit to Glentress / Kielder or a ride around some of our local trails.

Reivers Road Races

We are justifiably proud of our Reivers Road Race. This is an annual race, usually the last Saturday in March. HQ is Etal village hall. The race is organised under BC regulations. We use a 31km lap (usually 2 laps) taking in both Ford Bank and Citroen Hill. We run two races on the day - an Open Cat3/4 race in the morning and a women only race in the afternoon. Supporting “grass routes” racing is part of our club ethos. We are also proud to support and work with local businesses including Simpsons Malt, Cheviot Brewery, Northern Edge Coffee, and others as part of this event.

How to get BW kit

We have an Online shop with NOPINZ who provide all our club kit. Ordering kit is really easy and you do it directly at the NOPINZ online store.

Apres Velo Kit

And for those occasions when you’re not on your bike, you can still relax in style. We have a range of club branded leisure wear including quick dry t-shirts, polo shirts, body warmers, fleeces, jackets, body warmers and even bobble hats. It’s important to always look fast, even off the bike.

Club Coaches

Need some advice or training? We are fortunate in having a wealth of knowledge within the club. We have members who have experience of road races, cyclocross races, sportives, bikepacking, mountain biking and gravel rides. If you need help then just ask any committee member and we’ll point you in the right direction. We also have our very own British Cycling qualified coaches within the club. These are our coaches with their particular interests:

Club Welfare Officer

David Wesley is our appointed club welfare officer and is our point of contact should you have any issues or concerns regarding members.

Annual Awards

Our annual Awards Evening takes place in December. We offer awards for a range of cycling achievements. Here’s the list of what was awarded last year.

Insurance

Think about what would happen were you to have an accident, or if you were to cause an accident. It is a Club requirement that all who ride with us have liability insurance.

Club Liability Insurance

The Club and it’s officials (committee and appointed ride leaders) have liability insurance through our affiliation with British Cycling.
